Tree-like shrub to 2.5 m, reseeder. Stems grey. Leaves 3-foliolate, glabrous, rigid, claw-like with strong, recurved mucro. Flowers longer than leaves, mauve, standard darker colour with large white M-shaped nectar patch with purple flash It is characterized by its obovate prickly leaves with sharply recurved mucros, and large swollen yellowish green calyces. The species hybridizes with P. pinnata so in areas where they are sympatric hybrids can be found. The hybrids have longer softer 3-folioate leaves.
