Tobacco Roller

Growing up, we always knew these as tobacco rollers (or tabakrollertjies / tabakrolletjies).

chewing tabacco!

'cause they roll up like coils of chewing tabacco!
Dont see chewing tabacco so much nowadays - would kids know what we are talking about?

tabakrollertjie

What is the difference between tabakrollertjie and tabakrolletjie? Would the first be "one who rolls" and the second "a roll"

Yes

The English version was always tobacco rollers (one who rolls), but phonetically (at least to my English ear), the Afrikaans could be written as tabakrollertjie: one who rolls tobacco, or as tabakrolletjie: a roll of tobacco. The latter makes more sense, and would probably be the origin of the English version as well (perhaps a mistranslation).
