Dead snake

I found this snake dead on the side of the road, with its head inside a snail shell. When I removed its head from the shell, the snail came along as it was firmly clamped between the snake's jaws. There were no signs of trauma whatsoever on the snake's body. Is it possible that trying to eat this snail somehow killed it?

Snail identification

Thanks and will do, but I am unsure of the species of the snail. I will post the close-up photos that I have this evening or tomorrow. Those are the innards of the snail in the snake's mouth.

ID of snail (or snake)

you dont need to know IDs for iSpot. iSpot is great for finding out the IDs!! Someone will know! and it is free and fast!

PS

Please "I agree" to the subspecies ID if you agree with it. That is how iSpot works: your votes contribute to the "Likely ID" - your input is vital!!

thanks!

thanks!

autopsy time..

the eye still looks glossy, and the snail guts shiny, so it could not have been dead for long. someone, not squeamish, should cut open and see what else is in the belly. strange case.
